Phase 1 — Informal Exploration
This is your warm-up session. Don't try learning everything there
is to know — not at this early stage of your learning experience.
Relax and enjoy the flow of information. Hopefully you will pick up
a sense of excitement about this big learning project.
This is also a good time to set up your Learning Journal for this
program. Record your initial thoughts, take notes of things that
interest you in the less formal learning resources shown below.
[beware of snake-oil marketing out there. Stay with this program]
Completion Time: About 1 week
Phase 2 — Video Lecture Series
Watch each video twice. For the first viewing, you simply want to
get a sense of the content. The second time, you should be prepared
to take notes in your Learning Journal and begin writing down your
own questions and comments about the topic.
When you have completed the series in this fashion, go
through the entire series once again. The objectives are (1) to encourage yourself
about how much you are learning, (2) to fill in some gaps in
your understanding of the topic, and (3) set the stage for the next
phase of study.
Note: Your Learning Journal should be growing.
Completion Time: About 1 month
Phase 3 — The Contemporary Marketing Course
This is the real working phase of the program. It is built around
the Student Companion Website and the Google Preview of a popular
marketing textbook: Boone and Kurtz, Contemporary Marketing.
Completion Time: 3-5 months
Phase 3 — Browse and Report
Objectives here are to bring together all that you have learned
in this program and present it as an organized summary at the end of
your Learning Journal. This is also the time to set up a blog that
is dedicated to your learning experience here.
Finally, you can profit from some further textbook browsing.
Completion Time: Approx 1 month

This is an intensive study program for general marketing. If you
complete the work as prescribed here, you will have as much, or better,
understanding of the subject as college students in the finest business
schools in the world. There is only one catch: it takes a great deal of
effort and determination to make it happen.
There are four major phases in this program. In the first phase, you
simply check out some fairly lightweight sources of learning material
for the course. By the time you reach the final phase, you will be ready
to add an impressive Learning Journal and public blog site to your
career portfolio.
Minimum completion time is on the order of 7 months. It would be
difficult (an inadvisable) to attempt doing it in less time. But you can
take as long as you need.
