For our purposes at Free-Ed.Net, there is a huge difference between critical reasoning and rhetoric. Courses in "critical thinking"  rarely make this distinction, and they often emphasize the rhetorical methods.

But rhetoric is about defending a point of view, and the reliability of the view isn't relevant. Critical Reasoning (or Critical Thinking), on the other hand, is about searching for reliable views, no matter how inconvenient, or politically incorrect, the conclusions might seem.
