8-3    Combining Like Terms

 

Like terms are expressions that have the same variable, or letter.  Some examples of like terms are:

2x and 4x, y and 5y,

 

 

Examples

Combine like terms

1.   2x + 4x = 6x

2.   3x + 2x + 4 = 5x + 4

3.  y + 3y + 2x = 4y + 2x
