8-5    Removing Parentheses

 

Example

Simplify 3(5x + 4) + 2
by removing the parentheses and combining like terms.

Problem  

Simplify 3(5x + 4) + 2

Multiply to remove the parentheses

 3(5x + 4) + 2 = 15x + 12 + 2  

Combine like terms

 15x + 12 + 2 = 15x + 14  
Solution  

3(5x + 4) + 2 = 15x + 14
