13-2.1    Adding Polynomials

Procedure

To add polynomials, add all of the like terms.

Examples

(9q 2 + 15q + 9) + (14q 2 + 12q + 8) = 23q 2 + 27q + 17

13-2.2    Subtracting Polynomials

 

Procedure

To subract polynomials, change the operation to addition and switch the signs in the polynomial being subtracted.

 

Example

(2x + y) – (x –- 4y) =   ? 

(2x + y) + ( – x + 4y) = x + 5y
