Studies in English grammar and mechanics deal with the English language in terms of word choice, spelling, grammar and, to some extent, composition.

Contemporary English grammar should set the standards for written and verbal communication; but given the fluid nature of the academic and social climates of the early 21st century, the "rules" of English grammar and composition should be viewed as recommendations, rather than rigid rules.
