In ancient times, trigonometry (the study of angles) was one of many sub-topics in Euclidian-style synthetic geometry.  Developments in science and technology—notably astronomy, navigation, and surveying -- raised the study of triangles into a realm of its own where it could be studied and applied with the powerful analytical tools of algebra.

Note

Although you can find courses and textbooks called "Trigonometry," the subject is often included in courses and textbooks called "Pre-Calculus."
