The arts and humanities are all about human creative expression, from designing jewelry to performing opera. It is a grand mixture of abstract academia and the mastery of creative hands-on skills. There are no boundaries on time, place, and subject matter -- the only limitations are the knowledge, skill, and imagination of the human race. We challenge you to become one of those who opens new doors to human expression and the opportunity for others to enjoy it.

The visual arts represent the human spirit and condition in the form of pictures and objects—photographs and sculptures, for example. In essence, the visual artists says, "I have something in my mind that I want to express in a way that others might see it, too." And they set about to do a painting, take a photo, make a video, or design an object.

The visual arts can be very "artsy" and altruistic in nature, or it can be very ordinary and highly commercial. Any one of the visual arts can be a simple hobby or a challenging and rewarding career.

human

"The humanities can be described as the study of how people process and document the human experience. Since humans have been able, we have used philosophy, literature, religion, art, music, history and language to understand and record our world. These modes of expression have become some of the subjects that traditionally fall under the humanities umbrella. Knowledge of these records of human experience gives us the opportunity to feel a sense of connection to those who have come before us, as well as to our contemporaries." (Quotation courtesy Stanford Humanities Center)

perart

For our purposes here (lifelong learning), the performing arts are forms of human expression that take place in real time. Contrast this with the visual arts where the object of art is created at one point in time, then effectively "frozen" for the appreciation of others in the future.

write

Writing is an integral part of lifelong learning. It is the de facto method for expressing new ideas and describing older ideas. From heartfelt love letters to the handwritten Declaration of Independence; from stone tablets to digitized 0s and 1s; from a short grocery list to War and Peace ... the written word is an awesome source of energy that fuels the progress of civilization as well as the progress of a night's homework assignment. Obviously, to master the tools of the written word is to grasp a handle on a future as personal as your own affairs and as universal as the future of humanity. What and how much should you appropriate for yourself? That's up to you.
